Computer-aided analysis and design procedure for rotating induction machine magnetic circuits and windings

2018

The aim of this study is to present a new, accurate, and user-friendly software procedure for the analysis and rapid design of rotating induction machine windings, considering both the electric and the magnetic specifications of the machine itself. This procedure is a valid aid for quick first stage design without the necessity of using finite element method (FEM)-based design procedures. FEM can be used in a second design phase in order to refine the first stage results. The design procedure is hereafter outlined and some examples show its capability.

Parameter identification of linear induction motor model in extended range of operation by means of input-output data

2012

This paper proposes a technique for the off-line estimation of the electrical parameters of the equivalent circuit of linear induction machines (LIM), taking into consideration the end effects, and focuses on the application of an algorithm based on the minimization of a suitable cost function involving the differences of measured and computed by simulation inductor current components. This method exploits an entire start-up transient of the LIM to estimate all the 4 electrical parameters of the machine (Rs, L s, σ Ls, Tr). It proposes also a set of tests to be made to estimate the variation of the magnetic parameters of the LIM versus the magnetizing current as well as the magnetizing curv…

A Review on Approaches for Condition Based Maintenance in Applications with Induction Machines located Offshore

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Modeling, Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2012.2.4 Open access This paper presents a review of different approaches for Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) of induction machines and drive trains in offshore applications. The paper contains an overview of common failure modes, monitoring techniques, approaches for diagnostics, and an overview of typical maintenance actions. Although many papers have been written in this area before, this paper puts an emphasis on recent developments and limits the scope to induction machines and drive trains applied in applications located offshore.

Speed control of tubular linear induction motors for industrial automated applications

2016

The Tubular Linear Induction Machine (TLIM) has acquired great relevance over the past years for industrial automated applications. For this purpose, the complete modeling, simulation and determination of the parameters of a TLIM is presented in this paper. In addition, the TLIM speed control for this specific application is here described. In order to verify the performances of the proposed system, a test bench has been setup and good agreement is shown from the comparison between measured and simulated results.

Online Estimation of the Mechanical Parameters of an Induction Machine Using Speed Loop characteristics and Recursive Least Square Technique

2022

This paper presents a novel approach for estimation of mechanical parameters, inertia and friction coefficient of an Induction Machine (IM) using speed loop characteristics and Recursive Least Square (RLS) estimator. Using the 5th order dynamic equation for Induction Machine and the forgetting factor based RLS algorithm the technique herein proposed employs the speed of the machine and the torque as the inputs for the estimator. Results obtained compares the estimated parameters with the actual parameters under multiple step varying and exponentially varying scenarios. Upon analyzing the results, the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed identification technique is confirmed

Solid rotor induction machines for use in electrically-assisted turbochargers

2006

The stator leakage reactance has a major influence on the performance of a solid rotor induction machine. It is larger and it is more difficult to define and calculate than in a cage-rotor machine. When the higher leakage reactance is taken into account, the equivalent circuit model gives predictions of sufficient precision for design purposes. The airgap, normally chosen to be quite small, is preferably quite large by general standards. The torque varies as (V/f) 3 which makes it difficult to provide a wide range of constant power operation in a variable speed application. Slitting the rotor helps to improve the characteristic for variable-speed duties.

ESTIMATION OF THE INDUCTION MOTOR PARAMETERS

1995

ABSTRACT The paper presents the method of determining the parameters of induction machine models in an objective, algorythmic way employing the modified stepwise-regression method. The elaborated method is versatile. It enables to calculate parameters on the basis of the static characteristic or dynamic runs. The effectiveness of the described method is demonstrated in the paper by the examples of estimation of these parameters, which confirm the convergent of proposed method.

Monitoring and Diagnosis of Failures in Squirrel-Cage Induction Motors Due to Cracked or Broken Bars

2011

In this paper three diagnostic procedures, based on on the vibration, current and instantaneous power monitoring for the detection and monitoring of incipient faults as cracks or bar breaks on squirrel cage motors are briefly reminded. The experimental investigations, carried out at the SDESLab (Sustainable Development Energy Savings Laboratory) of the University of Palermo in order to underline merits and drawbacks of the methods applied to the same die cast squirrel cage induction motor, are presented. The results of the investigations confirmed the effectiveness of the diagnostic procedures here considered.

Sensorless induction machine drive for fly-wheel generation unit based on a TLS-based non-linear observer

2016

This paper proposes a sensorless technique for an induction machine Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) based on a non-linear observer integrated with a total least-squares speed estimator taking into consideration the IM (Induction Machine) saturation effects. The nonlinear observer is based on an original formulation of the dynamic model of the IM including the magnetic saturation, rearranged in a space-state form, after assuming as state variables the stator current and the rotor magnetizing current space-vectors in the stator reference frame. The choice of the observer gain has been made by the use of Lyapunov's method. The speed signal needed by the non-linear observer for the flux e…

Enhancing Speed Loop PI Controllers with Adaptive Feed-forward Neural Networks: Application to Induction Motor Drives

2022

This paper proposes the idea to improve the performance of the speed loop PI controller by using feed-forward and adaptive control actions. Indeed, when the system to be controlled is required to track a rapidly changing reference frame, higher bandwidth is usually required, making the system more sensitive to noise and consequently less robust. In such cases, to achieve a better performance in reference tracking while keeping noise rejection capacity, one idea is to use a feed-forward controller, employed to enhance the required tracking, leaving the feedback action to stabilize the system and suppress higher frequency disturbance. As such, this paper analysis the classical PI based field …
